Top 10 Most Expensive Vintage Motorcycles

Top 10 Most Expensive Vintage Motorcycles

Today we have a very special article, available only for Bikeadvice.in readers! We will see ten most expensive vintage motorcycles ever! This will be interesting, you don’t want to miss this, trust me!
Keep in mind, prices are only estimated. Most prices are based on actual auction values. Also I did not include a few motorcycles like Mars 1921. For example, this particular model is not even for sale, and prices can’t be found anywhere in the web. Here we have short technical overview and story of each motorcycle, as well the estimated value. Let’s begin from the least expensive motorcycles first!

10) 1966 Yamaha “The Batcycle” – $50,000

This one is very unusual. It was created for first “Batman” movie. As you see it is not a stock motorcycle, but it’s based on rare Yamaha Catalina 250. While engine was only 250cc two stroke parallel twin, it was modernized, and even with all additional weight and customization it was able to hit around 150 km/h.

Body was build almost entirely of fiberglass, and sidecar was made of steel. Go-cart that you see in the sidecar was fully functional and equipped with 50cc engine! Paintwork and fantastic styling made the price of this vintage motorcycle very high, at around 50,000$. Some replicas can be found for much lower price, but quality drops as well.

9) 1915 Indian 8-Valve (Boardracer) – $60,000

This bike is from Golden Era of racing history. It has humongous 1000cc 8-valve engine, in 1915’s this was unbelievable feat of technology! Rumors are that Indian’s top speed was 212 km/h! It was fastest motorcycle in the whole world!

Can you believe it? Indian, just like the other board track bikes didn’t had any brakes, clutch and throttle. Throttle was wide open, and only way to control it was a kill switch. There was also a version for civilians, equipped with brakes, clutch, throttle, and of course more comfortable and safe. Aside of that Indian is extremely rare and valuable piece of history. If you want to acquire one, get ready to pay more than 55k for fully restored exemplars!

8. 1928 Coventry Eagle 980cc Flying 8 – $85,000

Flying 8 was one of the most iconic bikes at that time. And it was for a reason, it had fantastic looks, wild power and the character of a true motorcycle. In fact, it was almost as good as the legendary Brough Superior! The engine of this beast was 980cc V-twin with overhear valves.

Power unit allowed reaching speeds of 134 km/h, and that is excellent result for a side-valve. Also it was pretty lightweight bike despite “heavy” looks – 180kg. Unfortunately, last Flying 8 left the factory in 1930, because of world financial crisis. After that manufacturers concentrated their efforts on cheaper and lighter models. By any standards Coventry Eagle Flying 8 was impressive machine. Also it was second most expensive motorcycle at that time.

7) 1951 Vincent Series C Black Shadow – $110,000

The Black Shadow was introduced in early 1950’s, and it was superior hand-built sports motorcycle every one dreamed of. It was meant to be more powerful than its predecessor – Vincent Series A Rapide. While size of the engine was the same (998cc), it was heavily modernized – compression was boosted to 7.3:1 and connecting rods were polished. Some additional minor changes were done too.

With such setup Black Shadow was able to reach 201km/h! Surprisingly, maintenance for this incredible machine was made even easier than for Vincent Rapide. It was named Black Shadow because all parts of the motorcycle were painted black, including the engine. Needless to say, that was a piece of art and true technological innovation. Vincent Black Shadow is one of the most sought after vintage bikes, and that’s why it costs more than 100k usd!

6) 1952 Vincent Series C Black Lightning – $160,000

Black Lightning was exclusive racing version of the Black Shadow. Almost every steel part was remade in aluminum or using the magnesium alloys. Also engineers of Black Lightning removed every unnecessary part from a motorcycle. Results were astonishing! New creation was on 38 kg lighter then Black Shadow! (170kg) Engine remained the same, although strong modifications were made: it had racing carburetor, stronger connection rods, polished rocker gear, special electric generator and dozens of other minor improvements.

Because of these modifications, compression in some models was as high as 12.5:1! Needless to say that resulted in 70bhp(52kW) and top speed of 240km/h! The Vincent Black Lightning wasn’t built for mediocre bike fans, it was so expensive and rare (only 31 original Black Lightning’s were made) that only luckiest and wealthiest people could acquire it.

5) 1924 BMW R32 – $165,000

This was the first motorcycle ever to “wear” BMW original emblem (as we see it today). For it’s time it was a very impressive machine, with top speed of 100km/h, 8.5bhp, 3-speed transmission and stunning looks.

For this motorcycle BMW engineers developed a closed circuit wet sump oiling system, which was absolute innovation. Other bikes in 1920’s were still using far less efficient oiling systems. Power unit of BMW R32 was 486 cc side-valve air-cooled flat-twin, which was powerful and economical at the same time. And dry weight of this motorcycle was only 106kg! For collectors R32 is most valuable bike from all BMW models, and that’s why it is priced over 150-160k $! (for a fully restored, functional model)

4) 1940 Crocker (Big Tank) – $230,000

It was one of the most popular motorcycles in America; Crocker was a legend (and still is). All Crocker’s were hand-made, and only built upon special orders (they weren’t made for most people, it was a luxury bike). Around 60 Crocker’s were made. In terms of performance nothing even came close to Crocker. Engine size was ranged from 1000cc to even 1500cc, and that happened in early 1940’s! That’s why Crocker was capable of doing 190+ km per hour! Unlike its rival from Europe – Brough Superior, Crocker was heavy and bulky motorcycle, like American “muscle cars” from 1970’s.

All parts were big and durable; gears were oversized for strength, though only 3 gears were available. Acceleration was immense; it reached 100 km/h so fast that huge companies like Harley and Indian couldn’t believe that they were easily outclassed by new small, private company. Aside of that Crocker has the wild spirit of a true motorcycle. It is a dream of every motorcycle fan out there.

3) 1939 Brough Superior SS100 – $300,000

First SS100 was introduced in 1924. The engineering of this model was developed through racing and competition, it won over 50 events in late 1920’s. Also it held world speed record (for motorcycles) 5 times! After this Brough Superior was known as the “Rolls-Royce” of the motorcycle world. All motorcycles came with a guarantee – 160km/h, though late 1930’s models were able to reach 200-210km/h! To remain stiff at so high speeds Brough used specifically engineered Castle forks and stout chassis construction.

Engine was massive 1000cc, fours stroke v-twin. It produced 85bhp, which was absolutely terrific for that time! Brough Superior SS100 had 4 gears, which was also a rarity. Without doubt SS100 was the most desirable and exclusive motorcycle of all time – design, power, speed and handling were perfect. SS100 gave absolutely sensational feeling for every one, who was brave enough to drive it on high speeds. So, could it be the best motorcycle in the world? You decide.

2) 1939 BMW (600?) Type 255 Kompressor – $400,000

BWM invented compressor technology in the late 1920’s, and in 1929 they already set few world records with their new invention. Second generation of supercharged BMW motorcycles appeared in 1935. They were equipped with two overhead camshafts; engine was brand new development, and new four-shift transmission was highly efficient for racing. These models were built only for racing events, they were not available for public.

Several most powerful motorcycles were equipped with 600cc supercharged engines, which produced around 80bph and provided nearly impossible top speed of 230+km/h! Weight was around 138-145kg (for different models). Aside of that they are extremely rare and valuable racing motorcycles, it is almost impossible to find one with 600cc. Original would easily cost more than 300,000$!

1) 1915 Cyclone – $520,000

The Cyclone is historically important motorcycle. It is nearly 100 years old right now, but what is more impressive that only 300 Cyclones was build back then in 1910’s. In these days only 8 (12?) originals were found. As Indian, another famous board-track motorcycle, Cyclone had huge 1000cc engine, which produced nearly 50bhp! (though compression rate was only 5.5:1, which may seem low) With such power and very low weight (technically it was a bicycle with huge engine) Cyclone was able to hit almost 200km/h!

It also was completely brakeless machine like others board racers. But you might ask why Indian is almost 10 times cheaper nowadays? Well it is much easier to find original Indian from 1914-15’s. On the other hand, Cyclone is simply a monumental bike, it is rarest motorcycle in the whole world!
That was the top ten most valuable bikes in the world, I hope you enjoyed. And please leave comment what could be your favorite motorcycle from this list!

The Most Expensive Choppers

For the last 20 years, this motorbike was on display at the National Motorcycle Museum in Coventry but, is now being sold and is expected to bring in a whooping $750,000. The bike was plagued by finicky carburetion and the magneto shafts were forever failing, sending AJS back to the drawing board. The new E95 featured cylinders canted 45 degrees to improve cooling and ease carb installation. It also got a host of internal mods and a revised frame. A pannier-style fuel tank lowered the center of gravity.

1928 Coventry Eagle Flying-8

The Coventry Eagle Flying 8 motorcycle got its name from the then high-end engine, which generated 8 horsepower according to Royal Automobile Club (RAC) ratings. Created in 1928 by the Royal Eagle, this iconic figure has witnessed the test of time. The bike has been owned by John Ellis, Ken Hodgson, Bruce Smith and Stephen Broadbridge. The 980 cc capacity of the engine ensured that the top speed of 80 mph was reached with ease which was quite a mean feat of that time. Other distinct features of the bike include the 8-inch disc brakes on the front and back wheels, and the Jardine gearbox along with the ghost silencers, which was a late addition along with the magdyno electric lighting and a steering damper which aided greater control at higher speeds. Top 10 Orange County Choppers Bikes

Top 10 Orange County Choppers Bikes

I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m a huge fan of American Chopper. I thought the show was better while it was still on Discovery Channel but it’s still a decent show on TLC. We’re missing out on some of the fun and games around the OCC shop but the star of the show is still the same. It’s still a show about the bikes that OCC builds. Over the 11 years that OCC has been around, the Teutels and company have pumped out some amazing bikes. So here’s my Top 10 Best OCC bikes.

#10 I, Robot Bike

Also called the Future Bike (so as not to upset the lawyers), this bike was designed for the premiere of the Will Smith movie of the same name. Smith himself was also consulted in the design of the bike. What resulted was the bike world’s equivalent to those crazy concept cars you see at international car shows. The biggest difference is that this thing can actually run. It’s probably not the best bike to take out on the back roads but as a design experiment, I think it’s a good look at what choppers will eventually start to resemble.

#9 B-2 Bomber Bike

I’m actually shocked that this bike is this low on my list. The bike was commissioned by Northrop Grumman (the lead contractor for B-2s) and the US Air Force to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the B-2′s first flight. The most obvious design feature is the gas tank which was built around the handle bars to look like the cockpit of the B-2. The wheels have five aluminum B-2 models mounted to form a star in the middle on each side for a total of 20 B-2 models representing each of the B-2s in the Air Force fleet.

#8 Statue of Liberty Bike

The first thing that jumps out at you about the bike is the copper that covers the whole of the bike. It turns out that whole bike is plated in copper that actually came from the Statue of Liberty. The company working on the statue’s restoration provided the copper and some artifacts to be incorporated into the bike. The wheel spokes are something special too. It’s hard to tell from this picture but the wheels feature three Statue of Liberty heads as spokes.

#7 NY Yankees Bike

Baseball’s Evil Empire even invades this list about choppers. This bike was commissioned by the Yankees and the Jorge Posada Foundation for a charity auction. Even if you hate the Yankees, you’d have a hard time hating this bike. An expertly fabricated baseball and Yankees logo are on the engine and the Yankees “NY” logo is inset into the front and rear wheels. And, naturally, the trademark pinstripes feature prominently in the paint scheme.

#6 HP Bike

For a while there, Paul Sr. was a compensated endorser of HP computers. I’m guessing that it tied in with this bike build and outfitting the OCC shop with all new HP computers. If you look carefully at the top of the gas tank, you can see a little rectangle sticking out which is an HP GPS device. The great promotional tie in comes in the form of the use of HP’s trademark swirl designs on their personal computers. The paint scheme does seem reminiscent of what I have on my HP laptop.

#5 Australia Bike

The OCC boys once took a trip down to Australia to do research on an Aussie-themed chopper. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen the episode but I believe it was for an Australian charity auction. Even though the official national colours are green and gold, the maroon and gold colour scheme works well. But there are little touches of Aussie-ness in there such as the painting of the Great Barrier Reef, the silhouette of a kangaroo in the Outback and the Australian flag. I think this is one of the most underrated bikes that the boys have built.

#4 Intel Quad Core Bike

The Intel bike is fun simply for all the bits and pieces that you can’t see in the side profile. Intel commissioned the bike to celebrate the introduction of their quad-core processors so the OCC gang gave it a four-cylinder engine. The heart of the bike is a small mobile PC mounted in the gas tank with a fingerprint recognition starter, a digital dashboard, cameras instead of rear-view mirrors, a GPS system and wireless (maybe 3G) internet connectivity. This was easily the most technologically advanced bike that OCC produced.

#3 Black Widow Bike

I’m definitely going to catch some grief for not putting the Black Widow on top. If OCC and Paulie had a signature bike that launched them to superstardom, you’d have to say it’s this one. The intricate cutting and welding work on the web work in the wheels, over the tank and acting as fenders really sets this thing apart. On tonight’s episode, Paul Jr. is supposed to be starting on his new “Anti-Venom” project which is supposed to blow this thing out of the water. I don’t think that’s possible. While this is a good bike, I don’t think it’s the best OCC has ever produced.

#2 Fire Bike

The Fire Bike is a special project bike that was built to honour members of the New York Fire Department killed during the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11. It’s design evokes a fire truck from the truck cab shaped gas tank, ladder suspension covers, fire hose shaped exhaust pipes and diamond plate accents. The gas tank also has a piece of metal recovered from the World Trade Center inset in it. As far as tributes go, you’d be hard pressed to find one that’s as good looking… Or as fast.

#1 Sunoco Bike

Even I have to admit that putting what is more of a board-track racer as the top bike that OCC has produced is an odd choice for a chopper manufacturer. However, I’ve always liked different. While every OCC bike is different from the last, they’ve never really come close to reproducing something like the Sunoco bike. The colours and flowing lines of this bike make it one of the best looking that OCC has produced.

Orange County Choppers

Orange County Choppers

File:Orange County Choppers logo.jpg

Orange County Choppers (OCC) is a custom and production motorcycle manufacturer based in Orange County, New York, that was founded by Paul Teutul, Sr., and Paul Teutul, Jr., in 1999. The company was featured on American Chopper, a reality TV show that debuted in September 2002 on the Discovery Channel, which has contributed to the company's quick rise to fame. In 2007, Discovery Channel's sister channel TLC picked up the series in the United States and Canada. A new international headquarters designed to combine their production and retail facilities was constructed in the Town of Newburgh and opened April 24, 2008.

OCC's production facility was initially located in the hamlet of Rock Tavern, it then later moved to nearby Montgomery before moving into its new headquarters in Newburgh. The company also operates a seasonal kiosk at the Woodbury Commons Outlet Mall in Central Valley, NY.

File:OCC July 2008.JPG

History

OCC started as a sideline to the family's steel manufacturing enterprise, Orange County Iron Works, which was founded in the 1970s. In the late 1990s, Teutul Sr. began manufacturing custom motorcycles as an extension of his steel business, and in 1999 he founded Orange County Choppers. The company's first bike, "True Blue", was debuted at the 1999 Daytona Biketoberfest.

    Former staff

Sheet metal fabricator Mike Campo left on good terms in 2006 to seek new artistic work. In September 2007, fabricator/chief mechanic Vincent DiMartino and mechanic/assembler Cody Connelly left OCC and American Chopper. The two have since started their own bike shop, V Force Customs in Rock Tavern, New York not far from OCC's original shop. They also work closely with Paul Jr. Designs.

Minority owner/chief designer and fabricator Paul Teutul, Jr. was fired from the shop in late 2008. In January 2009, TLC served a notice of default due to Paul Jr.'s absence. Paul Jr. then returned to OCC briefly as a contractor, but left for good in April 2009. Paul Sr. then exercised a contractual option to purchase Paul Jr.'s 20% share in OCC and subsequently filed a lawsuit to force the buyout. After determining the language of the contract is too vague to allow Sr. to force the sale, the appellate court ruled on behalf of Paul Jr.

Paul Jr. started a new motorcycle design company, Paul Jr. Designs (PJD). After a one year non-compete clause ended, Paul Jr. opened a motorcycle shop in April 2010. TLC then commissioned a 7th season titled American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior which features both OCC and PJD.

    Bikes

OCC is best known for the bikes featured on American Chopper where bikes are built around a theme or, increasingly, for specific corporate or celebrity customers. The company has built custom bikes long before beginning the Discovery Channel show. Additionally, OCC launched a limited edition production line of motorcycles in July 2007, priced beginning at $31,000. These bikes include design elements originally developed for bikes featured on the show.

The range of standard production bikes will be extended to meet worldwide (with particular attention to Canada and Europe) legislation for motorbikes over a couple of years. This means that the bikes will be sold commercially outside the USA for the first time.

One of OCC's most popular bikes is The Fire Bike, which was designed by Paul Teutul Jr., to commemorate the New York firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. The bike itself has been modeled after a fire truck, and an actual steel rivet from the World Trade Center has been integrated into the bike itself, mounted atop the bike's gas tank. Paul Jr. stated that the bike was named "343", the number of New York firefighters who gave their lives on 9/11.

The popularity of American Chopper led the United States Air Force to commission a $150,000 "Air Force Bike", first put on public display in March 2005. The motorcycle is ten feet long and is modeled after the F-22 Raptor, complete with Air Force symbol rims, riveted gas tank, Raptor exhausts and rear-view mirrors in the shape of jets. Air Force recruiters commissioned it as a public outreach tool.

“American Chopper” Gears of War 3 Bike Revealed at Comic-Con

“American Chopper” Gears of War 3 Bike Revealed at Comic-Con

American Chopper Gears of War 3 bike

Not everything at the San Diego Comic Con revolves around super heroes and sexy cosplay girls. Sometimes awesome surprises are saved not for PAX or E3, but for Comic-Con. Today Paul Teutul Jr from Discovery Channel’s American Chopper revealed the custom bike he created for Epic Game’s Gears of War 3.

For those unfamiliar with American Chopper, it is a television show about a father and son team who build custom motorcyles for Orange County Choppers in New York State. Paul Sr and Paul Jr battle every week in screaming matches, but they still make time to create fantastic choppers for well known companies and celebrities.

The first thing I noticed on the bike was the huge back wheels. The rims that were made look like the COG Omen that is the symbol of the Gears of War franchise. If you look closely to the paint job, it perfectly matches the color, look and feel of the armor Marcus and the rest of Delta Squad wear. You can’t tell from the pics, but I would almost bet that there are also blue LED lights to make it glow.

Paul Jr with the Gears of War 3 chopper

Paul Jr speaks to the crowd about his masterpiece.

This bike is one of two that were built. The one revealed today will more than likely be showcased at Epic Game’s headquarters in Cary, NC. The second bike will be given away in a Best Buy Sweepstakes as well as a trip to New York City for the Gears of War 3 Launch event.

If you would like to see how these bikes were created, you can set your DVRs to “American Chopper: Junior vs. Senior” on Sept. 19 and Sept. 26. which just happen to coincide with the release of the game on September 20. I know I’ll be watching and then stand in line for the midnight launch.

American Chopper – Paul Sr. Gets Pwned By Paul Jr.

American Chopper – Paul Sr. Gets Pwned By Paul Jr.

American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior season final concluded on Monday with the Cadillac unveil. For those not following the show, Paul Jr. was fired by his father, Paul Sr., from Orange County Chopper (OCC) two years ago. Jr. went on to start his own rival chopper shop (Paul Jr. Designs) and that started the Senior vs. Junior series of American Chopper.

Up until now, the two shops had never faced each other in a build off. Then Cadillac decided it would be a good idea to commission both OCC and PJD to design a bike for Cadillac. The bikes would then be unveiled at the GM Design Center, and fans will get to vote on which bike is best. Cadillac and Discovery would then auction off the bikes to the highest bidder and the money would go to Cure Duchenne.

For Cadillac, this was a media coup. For the cost of two bikes, which I assume cost $150K each, Cadillac was able to get themselves front and center into two season final episodes of American Chopper, which was the highest rated show during its Monday time slot. This could go down as the best $300K ad spend in history.

So, who build the better bike? Discovery opened the voting shortly after the show aired but have since shut it down. The reason? I think it’s to save Paul Sr. from further embarrassment. Before voting got shut down, Paul Jr. was leading with 96% of the over 200K votes casted.

In the charity auction, the current high bid for Senior’s bike is $10,000. The high bid for Junior’s bike is $100,000. The bidding will end July 31. I have a feeling Senior will end up buying his bike back for $100K just to make himself look good. I’m expecting Junior’s bike to go for $250K or more.
Who do you think won the bike build off between Senior and Junior? Sound off in the comments.

    Airplane Parts and Function

    Airplane Parts and Function

Computer drawing of an airliner with the parts tagged.

This page shows the parts of an airplane and their functions. Airplanes are transportation devices which are designed to move people and cargo from one place to another. Airplanes come in many different shapes and sizes depending on the mission of the aircraft. The airplane shown on this slide is a turbine-powered airliner which has been chosen as a representative aircraft.

For any airplane to fly, one must lift the weight of the airplane itself, the fuel, the passengers, and the cargo. The wings generate most of the lift to hold the plane in the air. To generate lift, the airplane must be pushed through the air. The air resists the motion in the form of aerodynamic drag. Modern airliners use winglets on the tips of the wings to reduce drag. The turbine engines, which are located beneath the wings, provide the thrust to overcome drag and push the airplane forward through the air. Smaller, low-speed airplanes use propellers for the propulsion system instead of turbine engines.

To control and maneuver the aircraft, smaller wings are located at the tail of the plane. The tail usually has a fixed horizontal piece, called the horizontal stabilizer, and a fixed vertical piece, called the vertical stabilizer. The stabilizers' job is to provide stability for the aircraft, to keep it flying straight. The vertical stabilizer keeps the nose of the plane from swinging from side to side, which is called yaw. The horizontal stabilizer prevents an up-and-down motion of the nose, which is called pitch. (On the Wright brother's first aircraft, the horizontal stabilizer was placed in front of the wings. Such a configuration is called a canard after the French word for "duck").

At the rear of the wings and stabilizers are small moving sections that are attached to the fixed sections by hinges. In the figure, these moving sections are colored brown. Changing the rear portion of a wing will change the amount of force that the wing produces. The ability to change forces gives us a means of controlling and maneuvering the airplane. The hinged part of the vertical stabilizer is called the rudder; it is used to deflect the tail to the left and right as viewed from the front of the fuselage. The hinged part of the horizontal stabilizer is called the elevator; it is used to deflect the tail up and down. The outboard hinged part of the wing is called the aileron; it is used to roll the wings from side to side. Most airliners can also be rolled from side to side by using the spoilers. Spoilers are small plates that are used to disrupt the flow over the wing and to change the amount of force by decreasing the lift when the spoiler is deployed.

The wings have additional hinged, rear sections near the body that are called flaps. Flaps are deployed downward on takeoff and landing to increase the amount of force produced by the wing. On some aircraft, the front part of the wing will also deflect. Slats are used at takeoff and landing to produce additional force. The spoilers are also used during landing to slow the plane down and to counteract the flaps when the aircraft is on the ground. The next time you fly on an airplane, notice how the wing shape changes during takeoff and landing.

The fuselage or body of the airplane, holds all the pieces together. The pilots sit in the cockpit at the front of the fuselage. Passengers and cargo are carried in the rear of the fuselage. Some aircraft carry fuel in the fuselage; others carry the fuel in the wings.
As mentioned above, the aircraft configuration in the figure was chosen only as an example. Individual aircraft may be configured quite differently from this airliner. The Wright Brothers 1903 Flyer had pusher propellers and the elevators at the front of the aircraft. Fighter aircraft often have the jet engines buried inside the fuselage instead of in pods hung beneath the wings. Many fighter aircraft also combine the horizontal stabilizer and elevator into a single stabilator surface. There are many possible aircraft configurations, but any configuration must provide for the four forces needed for flight.
